Welcome Evelyn Maynard Trilogy fans! We’re here to answer some burning (pun intended) questions posted in The Snow Lodge. Please welcome Uncle Lucian, Evie, Alec, Tyler, Josh, and Ethan.
Let’s start with an easy question, Ethan this is for you. What are your favorite foods to bake or cook for the holidays (or any holiday of your choice)?
Ethan: We spend most holidays with the fam, so I like to dig into the old family recipes box for that. There are recipes in there dating back generations from all our families. Sometimes I like to put my own twist on them.
I’m glad cooking hasn’t become a chore after running and owning restaurants. The next question is for Alec. What is your favorite memory of you and Evie as kids?
Alec: There are so many. There’s nothing so joyful as having a little kid run towards you when they see you - even when you’re a kid too. As soon as she could walk, Evie would come waddling in my direction as soon as I arrived. Sometimes, she’d know I was coming before everyone else and I’d walk through the door and see her rushing up the hall, her little arms spread out, a massive grin on her face. Also I loved it when she fell asleep on my chest or in my lap. It was so calming.
Evie: I still love napping on top of you.
Josh: Awwwww!
Ethan: And doing other things on top of him too, amirite? Heh heh!
Aww! So cute! I bet it was sweet for your parents to see. Okay, next question is for Josh. How are you enjoying the attention from all your students now you're teaching? Still got Evelyn on your mind while they're flirting with you?
Josh: I always have Evelyn on my mind. My students flirt with me? I hadn’t noticed.
Tyler: *scoffs
Evie: Please!
Alec and Ethan: *throws popcorn at Josh with sceptical looks on their faces
Josh: *laughs
Josh: OK, OK! Fine, some of them flirt. But I’m a professional and the only woman’s attention I want is sitting right here.
Tyler, even though you already know your question: What was the truth that made you smile when Dot’s babies were born?
Tyler: In that moment, I was holding baby Nina in my arms. My ability flared bright in my mind and I knew that Eve was thinking about what I’d be like as a father - what each of us would be like as a father. I already knew she’d be an incredible mother, but we weren’t ready for that step just yet, and it was Dot’s day so I didn’t say anything. That was the beginning of all of us starting to think about growing our family.
That leads right into the next question. Do you want kids? How many? Who wants to be a dad first if yes?
Ethan: YES! I want sixteen!
Evie: Er… no.
Tyler: Some of us were unsure for a while, but I think we’re all on the same page now.
Josh: Way to be vague bro.
Tyler: What? I’m just trying to avoid spoilers.
Josh: If they’re here, they’ve already read the whole thing. They know.
Alec: Do you have any idea how many ways there are to fuck up a kid without even trying?
Tyler, Josh & Ethan: *groan
Evie: Knock it off. You’re an amazing dad precisely because you’re aware of how your behavior affects our child.
Alec: *grumbles
Evie: We’ll probably have two or three. See what happens.
Ethan: Eight! That’s my final offer.
You’d need a bus to travel with eight kids! Now let’s shift to the cage fights. Alec, what was it like to see Ty fight in the cage?
Alec: He was different back then. We were both so angry with the world. Gabe approaches everything with a sense of determination, and this crazy, deviant, violent shit was no different. He was almost obsessive until he learned to fight without making that light above the cage come on with his ability - and without getting his ass handed to him. Haha! But even once he figured out how to control his ability fully, the way he fought - it was like he could see his opponent’s next move anyway.
Tyler: Pretty sure we both got our asses handed to us at the beginning.
Tyler and Alec, since you’re both familiar with The Hole, what went through your minds when you saw Evie at the fight? And Tyler what was it like giving her a ride home?
Alec: Pain. Shame. Rage. I hated that she was seeing what I was capable of with and without my ability.
Tyler: When I saw her in the crowd I thought “Oh shit.” When her and Alec got into it again I thought “Oh shit!” When she got on the back of the bike with me I thought “Oh shit.” By the time we were on the road I was trying to think about literally anything other than her tight little body wrapped around mine. I wanted to just pull off the road into the woods, plant her on the seat in front of me and…
Evie: OK! I think they get it. *cover’s Tyler’s mouth with her hand
Tyler: Haha! Point is, when I dropped her off, she was clearly upset and I wanted to chase after her, talk to her, but there was no way I was getting off that bike.
Alec: Because of your giant boner.
Tyler: Because of my giant boner, yes.
Last question about that night, Alec, after the fight at the hole what did Tyler hear that made him hug you and tell you to talk to him?
Alec: Uh… it’s… um…
Tyler: Alec’s not the best at talking about his feelings. And I didn’t hear anything specifically. My ability doesn’t really work like that. It’s more that I just knew everything he was struggling with. It was a lot.
Ethan: He was just being his broody, emo self, like usual.
Alec: I do not brood!
Josh: You kinda do, man.
Alec: Shut up. Look, that night was rough. What Gabe’s ability showed him was how fucked up I was about everything. I loved her and I hated her for making me more of a monster than I already was. I hated myself for the way I’d treated her that first time we hooked up in the study. I hated that I’d made everyone worry about me. I hated the world for keeping us apart for so long. I just wanted to hold her and let her heal me - in every way - but I felt like I didn’t deserve it.
That’s heartbreaking. Uncle Lucian, you were dealing with your own tragedy, finding out about Joyce. What is one thing that Eve does/says that reminds you of her mom?
Lucian: There are so many. When she first came to Bradford Hills, it hurt just to look at her. She looked just like Joyce. She has a lot of the same mannerisms - the way she tilts her head when she’s thinking hard about something, the way she leans on her left elbow when she’s relaxed on the couch, her laugh. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard her laugh and my heart did a little somersault at the sound… before plummeting once my brain caught up and reminded me that it’s not the love of my life in the other room. It was painful to have the constant reminders all the time as I grieved Joyce, and sometimes it still is. But Evelyn is like a daughter to me, and the more I got to know her, the more she took up a special place in my heart - still deeply connected to my memory of Joyce, but a place all her own. Now I’m grateful to have her in our lives, grateful for the bitter/sweet reminders.
To get more philosophical, everyone. Is there anything you would change about the past?
*they all share meaningful looks and gesture to Evelyn to answer
Evie: We’ve spoken about this a lot. There are things that each of us thinks about and wonders what would’ve been if it had played out differently. But here’s the thing - we’ve gotten to a place where we have no regrets. What’s the point? It’s in the past and can’t be changed, so why waste energy on it?
Let’s go back to Australia. Guys, what was the first thing that ran through your minds when you found out that Eve's last name was her ex's last name?
Tyler: My ability kicked in immediately and told me what I wanted to know. She didn’t love him anymore, she didn’t want to be with him. It really didn’t matter once I knew that.
Josh: I started running through all the logical explanations to why she would’ve chosen that name… while reminding myself she didn’t know us when she chose it… while trying to figure out how to get her to change her last name to mine.
Alec: Jealousy and rage. The kind that can make a man lose his mind if he lets it. The darkness inside me reminded me that she would never have my name, that she wouldn’t want to - why would anyone want to be stuck with me that permanently.
Ethan: And now none of us have a choice anyway. We’re all stuck with you! Hahaha!
Alec: *smacks Ethan’s stomach
Ethan: Oof! Anyway, I just wanted to hit something. This Blackburn dude if possible.
Well, good thing Evie could explain things. Eve, how’s your relationship with Harvey now?
Evie: Great! We’re very good friends. He’s been to visit us a couple of times and we’ve been to Australia to see him and his sister. The guys are friends with him too now that our Bond is solid and everything is calm.
Continuing with exes, Eve, are you still friends with Dana? If yes, Alec, does it still freak you out?
Evie: Absolutely! Dana never did anything wrong as far as I’m concerned. That’s all ancient history anyway. She’s an amazing woman and I’m lucky to have her in my life. She’s been travelling more for work, so I don’t get to see her as often, but we still catch up when we can.
Alec: Nah. Even if it did, it’s not up to me to dictate who Evie is friends with. That’s some toxic masculinity shit and I may brood from time to time but I always want what’s best for her.
Evie: *gives him sceptical look
Alec: What? OK fine! It freaks me out a little when you two compare notes about having sex with me. But I think you do it on purpose to get a rise out of me.
Evie: Maybeeeee… *laughs
You seem to love messing with each other. Ethan, what did you feel when you threw the fireball at Eve and it fizzled out?
Ethan: I didn’t think much of it. At the time, I didn’t have a Vital so my fire ability was pretty weak. All my fireballs fizzled at about that distance. I wasn’t actually trying to fry her! I just wanted to startle her. When she didn’t even flinch and just stared at me like she wanted to walk over, I knew I had to find out who she was.
A few more questions, guys. What is the biggest thing that Eve does that just drives you crazy?
Alec & Ethan: When she ignores me.
Ethan: Jinx!
Alec: Sometimes she gets really wrapped up in work and it’s hard to get her attention.
Josh: She folds down the corner of the page to mark her spot in books. *shudders
Tyler: She hogs the remote when I want to check what else is on.
Evie: You know what else is on! You literally know everything.
Tyler: OK, fine. I just like wrestling you for the remote.
Now it’s your turn Evie. What is your biggest pet peeve for each of the guys?
Evie: Ethan always tries to kiss and hug me after his workouts when he’s sweaty and gross. Josh is too controlling about what music we listen to - sometimes I just want to belt out a pop ballad. Tyler always knows everything - we have no secrets but I want to be able to surprise him sometimes. Alec broods.
Alec: … I do not brood.
Evie: Yes you do baby. *kisses him while he broods
Last questions, Everyone - What’s your favorite thing to do as a group?
Evie: I know what my fave thing is to do as a group. *smirks
Ethan: *gasps dramatically
Ethan: Evelyn! I am appalled!
Evie: Whatever. You love it.
Ethan: It’s true. I do. *dimpled grin
Alec: I just like hanging out at home, just the five of us. I don’t have to worry about my ability hurting anyone and there’s no one around to judge. We can all be ourselves.
Tyler: You’re brooding again. I like it when we work together to get something done or achieve something - like when we were getting Charlie out of that facility in the jungle. The teamwork - it makes me feel super connected in a way most other people can’t understand. It’s a Bond thing.
Josh: I like it when we go out in public and mess with people not used to seeing poly relationships. Hahaha! Like that time in the lingerie store. I like to stir shit. *shrugs
Hopefully we get to hear more about the shit you all stir up in a cameo - a spinoff, a book about the next generation….maybe… maybe not. We wish you all the best. Thank you for your time!
